Rice terraces in Sapa, Vietnam

SA PA

Sa Pa is a town in Lao Cai province, in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains of northwestern Vietnam. Sa Pa town stands at the head of a deep valley of magnificent rice terraces that are still farmed today.

Things to Do

1. Trekking. Many different packages are available, depending on how may days you want to trek. 1-3 days are the most popular choices. Prices vary from 20-40 USD, and typically inclusive of accommodation and meals.

2. Try horse hotpot or salmon. People in Sa Pa use horses for transport for generations and they butcher the horses when they are too old or sick to work. It is a traditional H'mong dish with different types of meat like beef, buffalo, pork, and goat. If you think this is too extreme for you, feel free to savour the salmon instead. Salmon hotpot is now considered as local specialty and particularly popular in winter, years after salmon is successfully farmed in this region in 2005.

3. Ride cable car or trek to Fansipan. At 3147m, Fansipan mountain is the highest mountain in the Indochina Peninsula. 15-20mins of cable car ride at VND 800k round trip will bring you to the top of the mountain, after that you can opt to climb up 600+ steps to the peak or pay VND70k each way for the funicular. Anyway, just pray hard that there won't be too much clouds to block your view and remember to wear something that will make you warm.

4. Visit the waterfalls. Love waterfall is about 15km west of Sa Pa town, and Silver waterfall is 3km before Love waterfall on the same way. You can arrange the motorbike to send you there through your hotel as it is too far to walk to.

5. Enjoy coffee with the breathtaking view. In this one of the most chilly destinations in Vietnam, find time for yourself to immerse in the city with a cup of Vietnamese coffee. To rest from the tiring trekking or just be blank and enjoy the breeze, you can always find a spot in town to have coffee with good. view.

Recommended Length of Trip

If you are into trekking and want to take things slow, you might want to stay for 3 to 4 nights. If you just want to be here to chill and relax, 2 nights are probably sufficient. Sa Pa is a very small, chilling and tranquil town, there is not much things to do actually after you complete the Fansipan trip.

Transport

Regular buses, shuttle vans, limousine vans are ideal options and it takes around 5-6 hours to bring you there from Hanoi. Private car from Hanoi to Sapa. You can always arrange through your hotel in Hanoi. Another popular option is the overnight sleeper train between Hanoi and Lao Cai, and daytime trip is available as well. In the town itself, you will be able to walk to most of the places as it is really a small town. Taxi is also available if you want to save time.

Best Time to Travel

September and October are the best months to visit as rice terraces are at their most splendid. In April and May weather is ideal and skies are clear. June to August is relatively hot but still fine. November to March is just chilly as it is.
