HOI AN

The former port city on Vietnam's central coast, cut through with canals. It is well known for its well-preserved ancient town and rich history reflected in a mixture of different cultures, from wooden Chinese house, colourful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese tube houses, to its iconic Japanese covered bridge.

Things to Do

1. The Ancient Town. Hoi An is very rare and fortunate that it managed to escape most of the bombings during the Vietnam war. Therefore, the beautiful and cultural buildings are spared and preserved until today. Spend your time for meals, coffees, souvenirs, and beers here in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Get a suit made. Hoi An is famous across the country for its textile industry. You may get your bespoke suit at relatively affordable price here. The tailoring industry here is very competitive so you are expected to bargain hard to get your things done. However, a reminder, leave around at least three days for the tailors or more days if you are asking for more volume or complicated pieces. 

3.  Japanese Covered Bridge. It is conveniently located at the center of the city. The 12-metered bridge is famous for its ornate carvings which many of them are in shapes of monkeys and dogs. This is considered romantic and popular spots for photography for tourists and couples, especially during the dusk. 

4. Hoi An Museum. Go to the main museum if you want to find out more history about Hoi An. In here you may find a huge range of pieces dated from the Cham period as well as the colonial period. 

5. Grab a coffee. Hoi An is famous for coffee and they have their own brews. Find a quiet cafe who roasts their own coffee beans, get a coffee, sit down and people-watch, spend the lazy afternoon like what the locals will do. 

6. Beaches. Hoi An has number of beaches but An Bang is one of the best. Have your sun time or fun time there as this is what you do at coastal city. If you want to avoid the crowd or want to find somewhere else quiet or lesser known, look for the Hidden Beach. Yes it is called Hidden Beach and it is as good as others but way more quiet and peaceful. 

7. Basket Boat Tour. The basket boat that you only see in Hoi An. It will not be a regret if you did not go but it will be a unique experience if you have time to go. This can be arranged with your accommodations and in the one hour trip you will see fishermen showing how to use fish net and boat spinning on the water.

Accommodation

Backpackers' hostels and villas prevail here in this small town. Not crowded by big international hotels. If you have sufficient budget, stay in a villa and get yourself fully recharged in this quiet and peaceful town. In between there are also boutique hotels that can fit both your wallet and privacy. 

Transport

Hoi An does not have its own airport so the nearest airport and railway station are in Da Nang which is just around 30km away. Bus is the most common option as it is easy and fast to get from Da Nang. Trips can also be arranged with your accommodations in Da Nang too. Within the city, it is walkable distances between most of the places. However, you may rent a bicycle to tour around the city with affordable prices. In some hotels or hostels you can even borrow from the properties. 

Recommended Length of Trip

The town is small and you may finish visiting all their sites in one to two days. Some people choose to just stay for one night, but if you are not rushing, 2 nights in Hoi An should be sufficient and at same time comfortable. If your purpose is to relax and recharge, you may spend three to four nights here to spend some time at the hidden beaches. 

Best Time to Travel

Hoi An has typical tropical climate and there is no big difference between the highest and lowest temperature. Best time to visit is from February to July where these are the driest months in year. October to January is the wet season where you should expect more rainfall in these months.
