HUE

Hue is a city in central Vietnam and was the national capital and home of Nguyen Dynasty emperors from 1802 to 1945. It has rich history ready to showcase, accompanied by its major attraction, the vast 19th century Day Noi Citadel.  

Things to Do

1. Hue Imperial City. Famous for being one of the UNESCO Heritage Site in Vietnam. The former imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen dynasty. You will see palaces that housed the imperial family as well as shrines tombs and gardens. Spend an hour to visit and feel the past of this walled fortress that is  full of stories. Link.

2. Thien Mu Pagoda. This historic seven-storey pagoda is regarded as unofficial symbol of the city. You might visit in early morning when all the daily activities in pagoda start or during the sunset when river and sky combine to create a picturesque scene. Link.

3. Tombs of the Ancient Emperors. One of the most popular sites that attracts so many travellers here every year. If you are interested in ancient architecture and history then you must visit these tombs dated from 19th to 20th century, carved to tell the stories of Buddhist legends.

4. Cycle around and walk along the Perfume River. The city is small and one of nicest to cycle in Vietnam. The traffic here is much less compared to other cities. You may go around the city or explore the surrounding countrysides. Take an evening walk at the waterfront promenade along the river banks of Perfume River. Just chill and you may also rent a paddleboat or book an elegant cruise dinner over there.

5. Experience with tours. Visit the city with English speaking tour guide to better understand the history of the city. 

Accommodation

There are plenty of guesthouses or boutique hotels in the city. However, if you want to look for ultra luxury, this is not the place. There are some very decent hotels but not the international big names.

Transport

Hue has its own Phu Bai Airport, which has domestic inwards flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Lands options are train, open bus and private car from Da Nang. Car ride from Da Nang will take you around 2 hours to reach Hue. You may also go from Hoi An. Within the city, Hue is very small, travelling around is easy. You might want to just rent a motorbike or bicycle to use for your few days trip here. Else, you can also just walk or get a motorbike ride if the distance of destination is a little too far to walk. 

Recommended Length of Trip

One night is ideal and two nights is sufficient. There is not much to do after you have visited the popular attractions. You may stay longer if you want to spend time to explore more to the countryside, the rice paddies, or get to know the locals' life a little bit more. 

Best Time to Travel

Best time to visit is during January to April, which temperature ranges between 20-24 celcius degree. And annual festivities take place in these months such as Tet (between January and February) and Hue Festival (April). May to August are the hottest months that temperature can go as high as 40 celcius degree during daytime. This period is also the travel season for the locals, resulting to more crowded places, limited and more expensive accommodations. September to December are the rainy months. These are the statistically coldest but wettest months in the year.
