MEKONG DELTA

Located in Southern Vietnam, the "rice bowl of Vietnam" Mekong Delta is a vast maze of rivers, home to floating markets, Khmer pagodas, villages and rice paddies. It is situated between Cambodia and Vietnam, while boats are the main means of transportation there. 

Things to Do

1. Enjoy a cruise trip or sampan trip. The best thing to do in the region that provides you both sightseeing and cultural experiences. Nature and humans combine as sceneries along the trip. You may book a Mekong river cruise trip or a tour package that includes cruising in its itinerary.

2. Visit floating markets. The delta is famous for its floating markets. you can see how local people transport, exchange, and trade goods on the water.  This is a native culture that you don't see everywhere. One of the famous one is Cai Rang floating market at Can Tho. You may also buy some coffee, bowl noodles or banh mi here at very cheap price. 

3. Vinh Trang Pagoda. Located in My Tho, the pagoda was built in 1849. The architecture is a combination of Chinese, Vietnamese, Khmer and European. Featuring various Buddha statues, you will hear monks chanting peaceful Buddhist prayer verses in the morning. 

4. Cai Be Fruit Orchard. Mekong Delta produced 70% of fruits consumed throughout Vietnam. Cai Be is the largest fruit orchard in Delta region and where the Mekong Cruise always stop by for people to explore the local attractions. You may take a tour through the premises and pick and eat the fruits right away. 

5. Bird watching at Tra Su Bird Sanctuary in Chau Doc, An Giang Province. Much more to the delights of nature lovers and photographers who are keen to observe bounties of birds in their natural environment undisturbed. However, only few of the sections are open for tourists to explore, to grant the bird species safe space to nest and flourish in peace. 

6. Visit the Khmer pagodas of Tra Vinh Province. Tra Vinh used to be part of the Khmer empire and now there are still more than 300,000 Khmer people residing in the province. Not only about the Khmer pagodas and temples, you can also experience Khmer culture and history.    

Accommodation

Mekong Delta is not a place for luxury or resorts. Most of the accommodations here are boutique hotels, lodges and homestay. But if you are expecting higher end properties, there also some familiar names like Sheraton and Vinpearl in Can Tho. 

Transport

You can hire a car and driver that costs you around $65-$75. The journey is about 1.5 hours from Ho Chi Minh City. If you are getting there by car, you may also stop and admire the floating markets and pagodas at Can Tho. It is possible to book the car tour with your hotel. More affordably, you may take bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho which costs you around $7-$14 each way. The fastest bus services will take around 3-4 hours to get you there. If you want an extraordinary experience, you may also book with your hotel or travel agencies for a speedboat trip to Mekong Delta. However, you will have to first head to Tan Long Dock near My Tho which is 70km south from Ho Chi Minh City. When at Mekong Delta, you may wander around by riding a bicycle or rented motorbike. If you need to travel to different regions, boat is the only option while luxury river cruise packages are also available. 

Recommended Length of Trip

Normally day trip is always more than enough as Can Tho is not far from Ho Chi Minh City. But it is also not odd to stay for a night at the region if you want to take it slow to explore the  wildlife and experience the local life with the nature.  

Best Time to Travel

The dry season is from December to April, while the best time to travel is from November to January where the weather is cool and water is at its highest. As comfortable as dry season, the rainy season is from May to November. The heaviest rainfalls occur in June and July.
